Heartburn Treatment Methods
Heartburn treatment methods depend on the severity and frequency of the
heartburn that is suffered. Heartburn is generally caused by acid from the
stomach and milder forms can be easily treated by drinking milk or ingesting
absorbable antacids. Slightly more frequent cases of heartburn can be treated
effectively with some lifestyle changes and the ingestion of acid inhibitors and
antacids.
Lifestyle changes as heartburn treatment methods include eating smaller
meals, avoiding food directly before bedtime and resting after eating instead of
performing activities such as stretching or bending over. Most cases of
heartburn are caused by pressure on the stomach and this is why the heartburn
treatment methods are so simple to achieve.
More severe and frequent cases of heartburn can be a sign of larger problems
or problems to come. If people try the above heartburn treatment methods but
still experience severe heartburn then it may be time to consult a doctor
regarding prescription heartburn treatments. If symptoms increase and include
nausea, pain and dehydration, then it may be time to seek proper medical
attention as it could be a sign of further illness. When heartburn treatments do
not work and heartburn is affecting your life, then it may be necessary to have
some medical tests performed to ascertain what the problem really is. Diagnosis
of another illness can be an instant cure to problems with heartburn or else
help choosing the most appropriate heartburn treatment methods.
Certain medical conditions can increase the chances and severity of heartburn
occurring, for example, diabetes and so it is important to ensure that there is
no other reason for the heartburn that cannot be relieved by normal heartburn
treatments. Avoiding certain foods such as fatty fast foods, spicy foods,
caffeine, chocolate and alcohol can all aid as forms of heartburn treatment and
if all these methods combined do not work, then the doctor may recommend taking
certain medications that quickly clear the stomach of food and acid or heartburn
treatments that block acid. There are also heartburn treatments that prevent
acid from occurring altogether but these are generally for when all else fails.
The last resort of heartburn treatment is surgery and this generally involves
tightening the lower esophageal sphincter muscle which allows acid to seep up
causing heartburn. This type of heartburn treatment is generally effective in
the most severe cases of heartburn. If left untreated for an extended period of
time then severe cases of heartburn can lead to further problems and in small
cases even cancer. This is due to the acid reflux and if symptoms increase or
appear for a long period of time then medical attention is perhaps necessary. It
is better to be safe than sorry and appropriate heartburn treatment should be
sought out before any major problems get a chance to occur.
