Heartburn Symptoms and Signs

 
The most obvious heartburn symptom is the feeling of heat and burning in the chest and sometimes neck. It is an uncomfortable feeling that feels as though it is related to the heart but in fact symptoms of heartburn are caused by acid in the stomach rising back up into the esophagus giving the uncomfortable feeling of burning. Heartburn are common especially if the sufferer eats large meals or lies down directly after eating. Heartburn symptoms can be experienced occasionally or they can occur more frequently and sometimes be due to GERD, which is gastroesophageal reflux disease.

The most well-known heartburn symptom is a burning sensation in the chest but other experience can include a bitter taste in the mouth and even difficulty in swallowing at times. A feeling that food is stuck in the chest or throat is often another telltale symptom of heartburn. Heartburn can even cause symptoms such as coughing, hoarseness and sore throats. Difficulty sleeping can also be a symptom of heartburn in cases of night time heartburn. Most heartburn symptoms can be easily treated but in the cases when treatment does not clear up these symptoms, then the cause may not be heartburn after all.

It is important to remember that stress can increase the severity of heartburn symptoms and even make them occur more frequent. Most heartburn symptoms can be easily resolved by making a few lifestyle changes, failing that, there are plenty of over the counter remedies and prescription medications that are designed to ease the symptoms of heartburn. It is essential that heartburn sufferers keep an eye on their symptoms in case they indicate a more serious problem.

Stronger medication and surgery can be the only options to relieve severe heartburn in some cases but by the time the sufferer has gotten to this stage, either the symptoms have dissipated or else been diagnosed as a different problem. It is very easy to confuse heartburn with other types of problems.
