Heartburn Symptoms and Signs
The most obvious heartburn symptom is the feeling of heat and burning in the
chest and sometimes neck. It is an uncomfortable feeling that feels as though it
is related to the heart but in fact symptoms of heartburn are caused by acid in
the stomach rising back up into the esophagus giving the uncomfortable feeling
of burning. Heartburn are common especially if the sufferer eats large meals or
lies down directly after eating. Heartburn symptoms can be experienced
occasionally or they can occur more frequently and sometimes be due to GERD,
which is gastroesophageal reflux disease. The most well-known heartburn symptom is a burning sensation in the chest but
other experience can include a bitter taste in the mouth and even difficulty in
swallowing at times. A feeling that food is stuck in the chest or throat is
often another telltale symptom of heartburn. Heartburn can even cause symptoms
such as coughing, hoarseness and sore throats. Difficulty sleeping can also be a
symptom of heartburn in cases of night time heartburn. Most heartburn symptoms
can be easily treated but in the cases when treatment does not clear up these
symptoms, then the cause may not be heartburn after all.
It is important to remember that stress can increase the severity of
heartburn symptoms and even make them occur more frequent. Most heartburn
symptoms can be easily resolved by making a few lifestyle changes, failing that,
there are plenty of over the counter remedies and prescription medications that
are designed to ease the symptoms of heartburn. It is essential that heartburn
sufferers keep an eye on their symptoms in case they indicate a more serious
problem.
Stronger medication and surgery can be the only options to relieve severe
heartburn in some cases but by the time the sufferer has gotten to this stage,
either the symptoms have dissipated or else been diagnosed as a different
problem. It is very easy to confuse heartburn with other types of problems.
If you are confused as to your symptoms or fear that there is another
underlying problem apart from heartburn, then it is a good idea to take note of
the heartburn symptoms experienced as well as their frequency and severity in
order to pass this information on to your doctor so that he can make a full
diagnosis.
Some heartburn symptoms can be a sign of further problems and they are often
mistaken for heart problems and vice versa. It is, therefore, important to treat
the symptoms appropriately and if the normal heartburn relief methods do not
work then it is time to visit a doctor to discuss the symptoms that you have
been experiencing.
